From Railroad Stop to Boomtown
Folks here called the area Melrose until 1908, when the Atlanta, Birmingham and Atlantic Railroad came through and railroad officials renamed the stop Chelsea. A grist mill, a sawmill and a few stores grew up along the tracks, and it stayed mostly rural for decades.
Chelsea first incorporated in May 1995, was dissolved soon after over procedural errors, and incorporated for good on March 1, 1996. Growth since then has been fast: 2,949 people in 2000 and 14,982 in the 2020 Census, with new homes still going up.
The city sits in central Shelby County, with U.S. 280 crossing its north side and Double Oak Mountain to the northwest. Chelsea Park covers 29 acres with ball fields and a walking trail, City Hall houses a small history museum, and the city puts on a Christmas parade every December.
