The Magic City
Birmingham was founded in 1871 where two rail lines crossed near rich mineral deposits, and its fast growth as an iron and steel town earned it the name the Magic City. It's the seat of Jefferson County, its city limits reach into Shelby County, and it counted 200,733 residents in the 2020 Census.
Sloss Furnaces made iron for about 90 years until production ended in 1971. Today it's a National Historic Landmark and an event venue, and in April 2026 it hosted the Magic City Art Connection.
