Helena started out as Cove, then became Hillsboro. During the Civil War, a rolling mill went up on Buck Creek beside the rail line, and as the story goes, railroad engineer Peter Boyle named the station after Helen Lee, the woman he was courting. The town took the station's name. Union troops burned the mill in 1865 during Wilson's Raid, and it was rebuilt in 1873.
Helena incorporated in 1877 and reincorporated in 1917, came back from a deadly tornado in 1933, and kept growing as the Birmingham area spread south. The 2020 Census counted 20,914 residents, up from 16,793 in 2010. The city sits in both Shelby and Jefferson counties.
Old Town is the heart of it: Buck Creek is dammed there to form Lake Davidson, the amphitheater on the creek bank hosts summer movies and the Fourth of July, and the welcome center is an old L&N caboose beside the tracks. The Buck Creek Festival, held the second weekend of May since 2001, is known for its rubber duck race.
