Columbiana, first called Columbia, won an 1826 vote to become the Shelby County seat over Calera and Montevallo. Residents celebrated by packing a big pine tree with gunpowder and blowing it up. The legislature renamed the town Columbiana in 1832, and it incorporated in 1837. The 2020 Census counted 4,462 residents.
The county seat had to fend off attempts to move it, so the 1901 state constitution added Section 41: Shelby County's seat can't leave Columbiana without a vote of the people. Work began in 1905 on the marble courthouse, finished in 1908, and the 1854 courthouse on Main Street now holds the Shelby County Museum and Archives.
The Karl C. Harrison Museum of George Washington has the largest collection of George and Martha Washington items outside Mount Vernon. Each year, Liberty Day brings music, crafts and fireworks on the last Saturday in June, a tradition since 1986.
