What Size Trailer Do I Need to Haul a Tractor?

What size trailer do you need to haul a tractor? It depends less on the tractor’s horsepower than on what is bolted to it. A 25 hp compact tractor with a loader and a box blade can weigh more than a bare 35 hp machine.

Here is how to figure out what you actually need.

Get the real weight

Start with the operating weight from the maker’s spec sheet. Then add everything hanging off the machine.

Rough ranges for bare tractors:

• Subcompact, about 15 to 25 hp: 1,300 to 1,800 lbs
• Compact, about 25 to 45 hp: 2,200 to 4,000 lbs
• Utility, about 45 to 75 hp: 4,500 to 8,000 lbs

Now add the attachments. A front-end loader adds 700 to 1,200 lbs. A box blade adds 300 to 700 lbs. A bush hog adds 400 to 900 lbs. Fluid-filled rear tires add 400 to 800 lbs, and those are easy to forget because you cannot see the fluid. A full fuel tank adds another 50 to 150 lbs.

Add it up and a 32 hp compact tractor with a loader, filled tires, and a box blade can hit 5,500 lbs. The spec sheet said 3,400.

Deck length matters as much as weight

Weight tells you if the trailer can carry it. Length tells you if you can put it in the right spot.

You want about 60 percent of the load sitting ahead of the trailer’s axles. That gives you the right tongue weight and keeps the trailer tracking straight instead of wagging behind you.

On a short deck with a long tractor, you may not be able to slide the machine far enough forward. Then you are stuck with a rear-heavy load, and rear-heavy loads sway.

Here is a simple rule. Measure the tractor from front to back with the attachments on. Add three to four feet of working room. A compact tractor with a loader and an implement often measures 13 to 16 feet. That is why a 20-ft deck works and a 12-ft deck usually does not.

Check width too. Most compact tractors are 48 to 72 inches wide at the rear tires. Loader buckets can be wider. Why a tilt deck helps with tractors

There is a real difference between ramps and a tilt deck when you are loading something long and low.

Ramps create a bend where the ramp meets the deck. A tractor with a loader out front and an implement on the back can bottom out right at that bend. Sometimes the loader bucket digs in before the front tires even reach the deck. It happens more often than people expect.

A hydraulic tilt deck lowers the whole back of the trailer instead. The tractor drives up one smooth, shallow slope with no bend to catch on. For a long, low machine, that is safer and a lot less stressful the first time you do it.

Do not forget the truck

The trailer can be right and the truck still wrong.

A 5,500 lb tractor on a 3,000 lb trailer is 8,500 lbs total. Take 10 to 15 percent of that as tongue weight and you have 850 to 1,275 lbs pushing down on your hitch. That comes straight out of your truck’s payload.

Alabama also requires trailer brakes at or above 3,000 lbs gross weight, and they have to come on by themselves if the trailer breaks away. So a tractor-hauling setup needs a working brake controller in the cab and a 7-pin plug to run it.

Common tractor jobs around here

Moving a subcompact between properties. A 1,500 lb subcompact with a mower deck can sometimes ride on a utility trailer. Check the trailer’s payload first, not just its GVWR. Payload is GVWR minus the empty trailer weight, and it is a lot less than the sticker number.

Taking a compact tractor in for service. This is the classic tilt deck job. The loader is usually on, sometimes an implement too.

Bringing a tractor home after you buy it. Look up the seller’s exact model and attachments before you book. Auction tractors often have more hardware on them than the photo shows.

Seasonal bush hogging or food plots. If an implement stays mounted all season, use the loaded weight and length every time.

The short version

Get the real weight with every attachment counted. Make sure the deck is long enough to put 60 percent of the load ahead of the axles. Check your truck’s ratings. Then pick the deck type that makes loading simple instead of a wrestling match.
