Utility Trailer Rental Guide: What Can You Haul on a 6' 10' Trailer?

September 27, 2026•4 min read

What fits on a 6’ x 10’ utility trailer? More than people expect by volume, and less than people expect by weight. That gap is where most rental mistakes happen.

Here is a practical look at what this size trailer actually handles.

Start with the payload, not the GVWR

This is the most important thing on the page, so it goes first.

Our utility trailer is 10 feet by 6 feet with a 3,000 lb GVWR. GVWR is the most the trailer is allowed to weigh in total, including the trailer itself.

So the amount you can actually put on it is 3,000 lbs minus the empty trailer weight. That is your payload, and it is meaningfully less than 3,000 lbs.

People see “3,000 lbs” and assume that is the cargo number. It is not. Always ask for the empty weight and subtract.

What fits easily

Yard debris and brush. This is the ideal load. Huge in volume, almost nothing in weight. You will fill the deck long before you get anywhere near the weight limit.

Lumber runs. A 10-foot deck handles most standard lumber lengths. Ten-foot boards lay flat. Twelve-footers will overhang, which is fine if you flag the end. Sheet goods like plywood and drywall lay flat easily.

Furniture and appliances. A washer, dryer, refrigerator, and a few pieces of furniture fit comfortably. A refrigerator runs 250 to 350 lbs, a washer around 200 lbs. Weight is rarely the issue here. Securing tall items so they do not tip is.

Moving boxes. A small apartment’s worth of boxes fits. Boxes are light for their size.

ATVs and UTVs. A single ATV runs 500 to 800 lbs and fits with room to spare. A full-size UTV is longer and heavier, often 1,200 to 1,800 lbs, and may exceed the deck length. Measure yours.

Mowers. A push mower is nothing. A riding mower runs 400 to 600 lbs. A zero-turn is usually 600 to 1,200 lbs depending on deck size. One zero-turn plus a push mower is a common and comfortable load.

Motorcycles. One or two fit easily. Securing them upright matters more than weight.

What does not fit, or barely does

Bulk gravel or soil. This is the biggest trap. Dry topsoil runs about 2,000 lbs per cubic yard. Gravel is closer to 2,700. A single yard of gravel can use up your entire payload while barely covering the deck floor. Wet material is heavier still. Order less than you think, or make two trips.

A pallet of pavers or block. A full pallet frequently runs 2,500 to 3,500 lbs. That is over the payload before you add anything else. Ask the supplier for the pallet weight and plan for a partial load.

Bagged concrete. Sixty-pound bags add up fast. Forty bags is 2,400 lbs. Count them.

A compact tractor. Almost never. Even a small compact with a loader is usually 3,000 lbs or more by itself, and it is longer than 10 feet with attachments. That is a job for the tilt deck equipment trailer.

A car. No. Wrong length, wrong capacity, wrong deck type.

Firewood. Green hardwood runs 4,000 to 5,000 lbs per cord. Seasoned is lighter but still heavy. A partial load only.

The rough weight cheat sheet

  • Topsoil, dry: about 2,000 lbs per cubic yard
  • Gravel: about 2,700 lbs per cubic yard
  • Mulch: about 400 to 800 lbs per cubic yard
  • Concrete bag, 60 lb: 60 lbs each, obviously, but count them
  • Refrigerator: 250 to 350 lbs
  • Riding mower: 400 to 600 lbs
  • Zero-turn mower: 600 to 1,200 lbs
  • ATV: 500 to 800 lbs

Mulch is the friendly one. Gravel is the one that gets people.

Loading it right

Same rules as any trailer. Put about 60 percent of the weight ahead of the axle. Center the load side to side. Keep heavy items low.

With a 10-foot deck, small adjustments matter more than they do on a long trailer. Moving a heavy item eighteen inches makes a real difference.

Tie everything down, including light bulky items. Brush and cardboard become airborne surprisingly easily.

Our post on distributing weight on a trailer covers the details.

Towing it

A 10’ x 6’ utility trailer is towable by a lot more vehicles than an equipment trailer. Many mid-size SUVs and half-ton trucks handle it comfortably.

Still check your numbers. Tow rating in the owner’s manual, payload on the door sticker. And confirm your ball size, which is usually 2" on a trailer this size, and your plug type.

In Alabama, trailers at or above 3,000 lbs gross weight need working brakes with automatic breakaway. Since this trailer’s GVWR sits right at that line, ask us about your specific load.

The short version

A 6’ x 10’ utility trailer is a volume tool, not a weight tool. It is excellent for brush, lumber, furniture, boxes, mowers, and ATVs. It is the wrong choice for bulk stone, full pallets, and anything with a tractor in it.
